How is cat age converted to human years?
This calculator uses the AAHA-endorsed convention. A cat's first year equals about 15 human years, the second year adds 9 more (so a 2-year-old cat is roughly 24 in human years), and every year after that adds 4. Kittens under 1 year scale linearly from 0 to 15.
Is the old multiply-by-7 rule accurate for cats?
No. Cats mature very fast in their first two years and then age more slowly, so a flat 7x multiplier overshoots middle-aged cats and badly undershoots kittens. A 1-year-old cat is closer to 15 human years than 7. The AAHA-endorsed table is the standard most US veterinarians use today.
What are the feline lifestages used by this calculator?
The calculator uses the traditional six-stage feline framework: kitten (under 1 year), junior (1 to 2 years), adult (3 to 6 years), mature (7 to 10 years), senior (11 to 14 years), and geriatric (15 years and older). Note that the updated 2021 AAHA/AAFP guidelines consolidate these into four broader stages plus an end-of-life stage.
How long do indoor cats typically live?
Indoor cats average about 12 to 15 years, and many reach 18 to 20 with good nutrition and regular vet care. Outdoor cats live noticeably shorter lives due to traffic, predators, and infectious disease such as FeLV and FIV. The calculator flags any age above 15 as exceeding the typical indoor lifespan.
How do I estimate a stray or rescue cat's age?
Vets use teeth, coat condition, eye clarity, and muscle tone as clues. Kittens have all their permanent teeth by about 6 months, tartar usually builds up from around 3 to 5 years, the lens may look cloudy from about 10 to 12 years, and noticeable muscle loss often suggests 10 years or older. A vet exam gives a more precise estimate than any visual check alone.
