Indian Percentage to GPA Calculator

This calculator maps your percentage to a US letter grade and 4.0 GPA using a standard band table. For example, 85 to 100 percent maps to A (4.0), 60 to 64 percent maps to C+ (2.3), and below 40 percent maps to F (0.0). The bands are more generous at the top and stricter at the bottom than a straight linear scale, which reflects how Indian marking compares to US grading.

The Central Board of Secondary Education uses the relation percentage = CGPA times 9.5. To go the other way, divide your percentage by 9.5 to get the 10-point CGPA. A CGPA of 8.0 equals 76 percent, and the maximum CGPA of 10 corresponds to 95 percent, so the tool caps the CGPA at 10.

A linear percentage divided by 100 times 4 understates strong Indian results, because Indian exams are marked more strictly than many US courses. An 85 percent in India is often near the top of the class, so the band mapping assigns it a 4.0 rather than the 3.4 a linear scale would give. Band tables are the convention most US universities and credential evaluators use for Indian transcripts.

Indian universities classify results by division: First Class with Distinction at 75 percent and above, First Class from 60 to 74 percent, Second Class from 50 to 59 percent, and Third Class or Pass from 40 to 49 percent. Below 40 percent is usually a Fail. The exact distinction cutoff can be 70 or 75 percent depending on the university.

Treat the result as a close estimate, not an official figure. Each US university, graduate program, and credential-evaluation service (such as WES) can apply its own cutoffs, and some convert course by course instead of from an overall percentage.
