What is age grading?
Age grading converts a race time into a percentage that lets you compare runners of any age or sex on one scale. It is the standard method from World Masters Athletics (WMA), also used by USATF and parkrun. A higher percentage means a stronger performance relative to the world-record-class standard for your age and sex. It answers the question of how good your time really is once age is taken into account.
How is the age-grade percentage calculated?
The age grade equals the age standard divided by your finish time, times 100. The age standard equals the open-class standard divided by the WMA age factor for your exact age, sex, and event. So the full formula is openStandard divided by (ageFactor times your time), times 100. For example, a 50-year-old man running a 3:30:00 marathon with an age factor of 0.8523 scores about 67%.
Where do I find my age factor?
The age factor comes from the official WMA age-grading tables, which list a value between 0 and 1 for every single year of age, by sex and by event. A factor of 1.0 means no age adjustment (prime age, around 20 to 30); a factor of 0.80 means the standard for your age is 1.25 times the open standard. This calculator takes the factor as an input so the math stays exact and you can use the most current published tables.
What does the age-graded equivalent time mean?
The age-graded equivalent time is your finish time multiplied by your age factor. It estimates the time a prime-age athlete of equal merit would run for the same event. Because the factor is at most 1, the equivalent time is always equal to or faster than your actual time, which lets you compare your result against open-class times directly.
What counts as a good age-grade percentage?
The standard WMA performance bands are 90% and up for world class, 80% to under 90% for national class, 70% to under 80% for regional class, and 60% to under 70% for local class. Most recreational runners land between 50% and 70%. Reaching 60% or more is a solid benchmark, and crossing 80% puts you among very competitive runners for your age.
Why do the standards differ for men and women?
Age grading uses sex-specific open standards because the world-record-class reference times differ between men and women. The calculator selects the male or female open standard for the event you choose, so a man and a woman with the same finish time can receive different age-grade percentages. This keeps comparisons fair across sex as well as age.
