How do I measure my grip strength for this calculator?
Use a calibrated hand dynamometer. Sit or stand with your elbow bent at about 90 degrees and your arm by your side, then squeeze as hard as you can for 3 to 5 seconds. Take the best of 2 to 3 attempts on your stronger (usually dominant) hand, and enter that single reading. Enter the value in kilograms or pounds to match the unit toggle.
What grip strength is normal for my age and sex?
It depends heavily on both. A 30-year-old man typically falls around 50 kg (110 lb) at the 50th percentile, while a 30-year-old woman sits near 30 kg (66 lb). Grip strength peaks in the late 20s to mid 30s and declines gradually after that, so the calculator compares your reading only to people in your own 5-year age band and sex.
How is the percentile calculated?
Each age and sex group has reference grip values at the 5th, 25th, 50th, 75th, and 95th percentiles, drawn from adult normative data consistent with the US NIH Toolbox and Wang et al. 2018 reference values. Your reading is placed between the two nearest reference points by linear interpolation to estimate your percentile from 1 to 99. The percentile is then mapped to a rating from well below average to excellent.
What does it mean if I am below the clinical cutoff?
The calculator flags readings under 27 kg for men and 16 kg for women, the cutoffs the EWGSOP2 2019 guideline uses to screen for low muscle strength (a component of sarcopenia). Being below the cutoff is a signal to look closer, not a diagnosis. If your score is unexpectedly low or has dropped over time, it is worth raising with a healthcare professional.
