Frequently Asked Questions about the YouTube Money Calculator

What is the difference between CPM and RPM on YouTube?
CPM (Cost Per Mille) is what advertisers pay YouTube for every 1,000 ad impressions on your videos, before any revenue split. RPM (Revenue Per Mille) is what you actually earn per 1,000 video views, after YouTube takes its 45% cut and after accounting for the fact that not every view triggers a paid, watched ad. As a rule of thumb, RPM is roughly CPM x 0.55 x your ad watch rate, which is why a $20 CPM in a finance niche often shows up as a $7 to $12 RPM in YouTube Analytics.
Why do RPMs vary so much between niches?
Advertisers bid differently for different audiences. Finance, investing, and B2B software pay $15 to $30 RPM because a single new customer can be worth thousands of dollars. Gaming, music, and kids channels sit at $0.50 to $5 RPM because the audience converts at much lower lifetime value and, for kids content under COPPA, personalized ads are turned off entirely. Health, education, and beauty fall in the middle. The niche picker in the calculator uses 2024-2025 industry estimates aggregated from public creator RPM screenshots and Creator Hooks-style reports.
Why is my actual RPM lower than the calculator suggests?
Three things usually pull a real channel below the niche midpoint: a high share of mobile or international views (which pay less), a low percentage of long-form watch time (Shorts pay a fraction of long-form RPM), and a lower-than-default ad watch rate. Drop the ad watch rate slider toward 0.4 to model a channel with lots of skipped ads, ad blockers, or background-listening viewers, or paste your real RPM from YouTube Analytics into the custom RPM field to override the niche default entirely.
Does this estimate include sponsorships, memberships, or merch?
No. The calculator only models AdSense ad revenue, which is the YouTube Partner Program payout you see in YouTube Studio under estimated revenue. Sponsorships, channel memberships, Super Chats, Super Thanks, merch shelf, and affiliate links are separate income streams and typically several times larger than ad revenue once a channel passes 100,000 subscribers. For a full picture, multiply the ad estimate by 2 to 5 depending on how aggressively you monetize off-platform.
Are the 2024-2025 RPM ranges still accurate?
The calculator uses historical 2024-2025 benchmark ranges from public creator disclosures and industry aggregates. They are a dated planning baseline, not a current-rate claim. Actual RPM varies by audience, niche, geography, season, ad inventory, and monetized playback mix, so compare the estimate with your own recent YouTube Analytics data.
