Why does WPM count 1 word as 5 characters?
The 5-character convention dates back to the mechanical-typewriter era and is still used by every modern typing test (10fastfingers, Typing.com, Keybr, monkeytype, TypingClub). It approximates the average English word length plus one trailing space, so a typist's character-per-minute rate divides cleanly by 5 to give a stable WPM number that does not swing wildly with vocabulary. Without a fixed standard, a paragraph of short words like "to be or not to be" would score double a paragraph of long words for the same physical effort, which would make scores useless for comparison or self-tracking.
What is the difference between gross WPM and net WPM?
Gross WPM measures raw output: characters typed divided by 5, divided by minutes elapsed. It does not care whether what you typed is correct. Net WPM penalises every error by 5 characters (one word), then divides by minutes. A 60 gross WPM run with 5 errors over 60 seconds turns into a 55 net WPM, since 5 errors cost 25 characters which is 5 fewer "words" over one minute. Net WPM is the honest score because a typist who hits 100 gross WPM with 30 errors per minute is not actually faster than someone at 70 net WPM with no errors. Use net WPM when you compare yourself across sessions or against published benchmarks.
What is a typical typing speed?
The global average sits around 40 WPM, the speed a casual hunt-and-peck typist reaches on a familiar keyboard. A typical office worker who touch-types lands between 50 and 65 WPM. Professional transcriptionists and court reporters using standard QWERTY work in the 80 to 100 WPM range; stenotype operators (chord-based machine shorthand) routinely exceed 200 WPM but on a different keyboard system. Anything sustained above 100 WPM on QWERTY is uncommon outside of competitive typists and a handful of pro coders.
What is the world record for typing speed?
On a mechanical typewriter, Stella Pajunas set the long-standing record in 1946 at 216 WPM on an IBM electric. For sustained digital typing on QWERTY, Sean Wrona is widely credited at around 200 WPM and has held titles on TypeRacer and competitive typing leaderboards. Burst speeds (a few seconds of perfect typing) push well past 250 WPM but are not comparable to sustained records. Stenotype systems are the only mainstream input method that routinely passes 300 WPM, since each keystroke produces an entire syllable or word rather than a single letter.
Why does touch typing beat hunt-and-peck?
Touch typing keeps your fingers anchored on the home row (A S D F J K L semicolon) and uses all ten fingers, so each key has a dedicated finger and you never have to look down. Hunt-and-peck typists keep their eyes on the keyboard, so they cannot read their screen as they type, which means catching errors and revising sentences is slower. The ceiling for hunt-and-peck is roughly 30 to 40 WPM no matter how much you practice, since the physical search for each key takes time. Touch typing routinely doubles that with a few months of deliberate practice, and the sustained speed lets you think one sentence ahead of your fingers, which is the real productivity gain.
