A standard 750 ml bottle holds 25.36 fluid ounces, which works out to 5 standard 5-ounce pours, the industry-standard restaurant serving. A generous 6-ounce pour yields about 4 glasses per bottle, while a 3-ounce tasting pour yields roughly 8. The calculator uses the 25-ounce convention and shows the pours-per-bottle for whichever pour size you pick, so the bottle count lines up with how much wine actually leaves the bottle.
Why does the dinner profile use 2 glasses instead of the cocktail-hour 0.5 per hour?
Seated dinners and cocktail hours produce different drinking patterns. At a cocktail reception guests drink fastest in the first hour (a full glass), then slow to about half a glass per hour as conversation takes over. At dinner the pace is anchored to the meal itself: most diners pair roughly two 5-ounce glasses with the food across a typical 2-hour seated meal, not on a per-hour cadence. The calculator switches profiles based on the event type you choose so you do not over-order for a sit-down dinner or under-order for an open-bar reception.
How should I split red and white?
The classic event-planning default is 60/40, slightly favoring red, which the calculator labels mostly-red (it uses a 65/35 split as the cleaner cousin). Swap to balanced (50/50) in warm-weather months or for seafood-heavy menus, mostly-white for summer afternoons, and all-red or all-white if the menu and season firmly point in one direction. The calculator rounds red to the nearest bottle and derives white from the remainder so the two sides always sum to the still-wine total exactly.
How much sparkling do I need for the toast?
Plan on 1 bottle of sparkling per 8 guests for a single toast. A bottle pours 6 to 8 small toast pours of 3 to 4 ounces, which lines up with the headcount math. Enable the sparkling option in the calculator and it adds the bottles automatically on top of the still-wine count, since the toast is poured in addition to the wine guests are already drinking with dinner or at the bar.
Why add a 10% backup buffer?
Real-world events rarely match the textbook average. A few extra guests show up, the warm room speeds everyone up, a bottle ends up corked, or the host opens a second bottle just so two tables can finish a pour. A 10% buffer covers all of that without leaving the host visibly running out, which is the failure mode most party planners optimize against. Unopened bottles can usually be returned to the wine shop, so rounding up is almost always cheaper than rounding down and scrambling at the corner store mid-event.
