Frequently Asked Questions about the Tax Bracket Calculator

What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?
Your marginal rate is the percentage applied to your next dollar of income, the top bracket you reach. Your effective rate is total tax divided by total taxable income, always lower because earlier dollars are taxed at lower rates.
Are tax brackets cliffs or tiers?
Tiers. Earning $1 more than a bracket threshold does not retax your entire income at the higher rate. Only the dollars above the threshold are taxed at the higher rate, so a raise never reduces your take-home pay.
Which year do these brackets apply to?
Tax year 2026 (returns filed in early 2027). The IRS adjusts thresholds annually for inflation, so 2025 and 2027 numbers will differ. This tool does not back-calculate prior years.
Does this include state tax, FICA, or deductions?
No. This estimates federal income tax only on the taxable income you enter. It does not subtract the standard deduction, apply credits, or include Social Security, Medicare, or state and local taxes.
Why do single and married separate numbers differ at the top brackets?
Through 32%, MFS uses the same thresholds as single filers. At the 35% and 37% tiers, MFS uses half the married-filing-jointly thresholds, which compresses high-income brackets compared to single.
