Seconds to Minutes Converter

Divide the seconds by 60. That is the whole rule. 90 seconds is 90 / 60 = 1.5 minutes. 225 seconds is 225 / 60 = 3.75 minutes, which is 3 minutes and 45 seconds. 3,600 seconds is 60 minutes, which is 1 hour. Decimal minutes express the whole duration as a single number with a fractional part: 3.75 means three and three-quarter minutes. M:SS splits the same duration into whole minutes and a remainder of 0 to 59 seconds: 3.75 minutes is 3:45 because 0.75 of a minute is 45 seconds. Decimal is the right shape for spreadsheets and multiplication. M:SS is the right shape for stopwatches, running splits, song lengths, and most clocks.

Because minutes are base 60, not base 100. A half minute is half of 60 seconds, which is 30, not half of 100. The same idea applies to every fraction: 0.25 minutes is 15 seconds (a quarter of 60), 0.1 minutes is 6 seconds (one tenth of 60), and 0.75 minutes is 45 seconds. Forgetting this is the most common mistake when reading a stopwatch that displays decimal minutes.

Yes. The seconds input accepts up to 10,000,000,000 (ten billion) seconds, which is about 317 years. The minutes input accepts up to 100,000,000 (one hundred million) minutes. The hours and days fields in the result panel let you read those large durations in a sensible unit: 1,000,000 seconds is about 16,666.67 minutes, 277.78 hours, or 11.57 days.

The remainder seconds are rounded to the nearest whole second before being shown. If that rounding produces 60, it carries into the minute count so you never see "3:60" in the result. Example: 224.7 seconds rounds the remainder of 44.7 up to 45 and renders as 3:45. The decimal minutes field stays unrounded to four decimal places so you can see the exact value when precision matters.
