What is the Rankine scale?
Rankine is an absolute temperature scale, like Kelvin, but it uses Fahrenheit-sized degrees. Zero Rankine is absolute zero, the point where all thermal motion stops, which is -459.67 °F. It is used mainly in some US engineering and thermodynamics work where Fahrenheit is the working unit but an absolute scale is needed.
How do you convert Rankine to Fahrenheit?
Subtract 459.67 from the Rankine value: °F = °R - 459.67. For example, 491.67 °R is 32 °F, the freezing point of water. To go the other way, add 459.67: °R = °F + 459.67.
How are Rankine and Kelvin related?
Both are absolute scales that start at absolute zero, so they never go negative. The degree size differs: a Rankine degree is 5/9 of a Kelvin degree, the same ratio as Fahrenheit to Celsius. You convert with K = °R x 5/9.
Why can't I enter a temperature below absolute zero?
Absolute zero is the coldest possible temperature, 0 °R or -459.67 °F. Nothing can be colder, so a value below that floor has no physical meaning and the converter returns no result. Enter a value at or above absolute zero to get a conversion.
