How is percentage decrease calculated?
Subtract the final value from the original, divide by the original, then multiply by 100. Formula: (original - final) / original x 100. A price falling from 200 to 150 gives (200 - 150) / 200 x 100 = 25% decrease. The original value is always the denominator, never the final value.
What are the most common percent-off discounts in stores?
Retailers cluster around a handful of tiers: 10% off (small promotions and loyalty perks), 25% off (mid-season sales), 50% off (end-of-season clearance), and 75% off (final clearance to flush stock). 33% and 40% off appear during longer sales. The calculator shows what each of these tiers would yield from your original value, so you can sanity-check a price tag at a glance.
Why can a percent decrease never exceed 100%?
For quantities constrained to zero or above, such as a price, weight, or count, a 100% decrease takes the value to zero and is the largest possible decrease. The formula can exceed 100% if the final value is negative. This calculator allows finite final values, so interpret results above 100% only when negative values make sense for the quantity.
Is percentage decrease the same as percentage difference?
No. Percentage decrease is directional and asymmetric: from 100 to 75 is a 25% decrease, but from 75 to 100 is a 33.3% increase. Percentage difference is symmetric and uses the average of both values as the denominator, so the result is the same in either direction. Use percentage decrease when there is a clear before-and-after; use percentage difference when comparing two values without a defined starting point.
How is a price drop different from a profit margin?
A price drop measures how much the price fell against its original sticker. A profit margin measures how much of the sale price is profit after costs. A jacket dropping from 200 to 150 is a 25% price decrease, but if it costs 100 to make, the margin is still (150 - 100) / 150 = 33%. The denominators are different: the original price for a decrease, the selling price for a margin. Mixing them is the most common pricing-math error.
