How many pavers do I need per square foot?
It depends on the face size and joint spacing. With a 1/8 in joint, 4x8 brick pavers cover about 4.3 per sq ft, 6x6 squares about 3.84, 6x9 rectangles about 2.58, 12x12 standards about 0.98, 16x16 large format about 0.55, and 24x24 slabs about 0.25 per sq ft.
How much waste should I add for a paver project?
Use 5 percent for a simple rectangular patio with straight runs. Step up to 10 percent for walkways with curves, and 15 percent for circular patios, herringbone patterns, or a driveway with chamfered edges. Keep a few spares for future repairs since paver color lots can drift over time.
How deep should my sand and gravel base be?
For patios and walkways, a 1 in sand bedding layer sits on top of a 4 in compacted crushed gravel base. Driveways carrying vehicle weight need 6 in or thicker gravel under the same 1 in sand layer. Cold climates with deep frost may need 8 to 12 in of gravel.
How much polymeric joint sand do I need?
Plan on about 1 lb of polymeric joint sand per sq ft of paver surface for typical 1/8 in joints. A 50 lb bag covers roughly 50 sq ft of small unit pavers like 4x8 brick, and more for larger formats with fewer linear feet of joint.
Can I use this calculator for a circular fire pit or curved patio?
Yes. Pick the circle shape and enter the patio diameter. For curved edges on a rectangular patio, use the rectangle shape and bump waste to 10 or 15 percent. For an irregular L-shape, pick the L-shape option and enter each rectangle separately.
