Why isn't mL the same as mg without a concentration?
Milliliters measure volume and milligrams measure mass. A medication conversion needs the product's labeled concentration in mg/mL, not the bulk density of the liquid. Read that concentration from the bottle and use mg = mL x mg/mL. Do not infer it from the liquid's appearance or from a preset.
Are children's liquid medication concentrations standardized?
Do not assume they are. Many current US acetaminophen liquids are labeled 160 mg per 5 mL, but older concentrated infant acetaminophen products used strengths such as 80 mg per 0.8 mL. Why does the 1 g/mL water density baseline matter?
Water near room temperature is commonly approximated as 1 g/mL, or 1000 mg/mL. That is useful for general density calculations, but it does not reveal the active-ingredient concentration in a medication. For medication, use the mg/mL value printed on the bottle.
