Frequently Asked Questions about the Lottery Tax Calculator
How are lottery winnings taxed in the US?
Lottery winnings count as ordinary income. The federal government withholds 24 percent immediately, but most large jackpots push winners into the top 37 percent bracket, so additional federal tax is owed at filing. Most states also tax winnings; rates range from 0 percent (FL, TX, CA, WA) to over 10 percent (NJ, NY).
What is the difference between lump sum and annuity?
Lump sum pays you the cash value of the jackpot today (typically 50 to 60 percent of the advertised amount). Annuity pays 30 graduated annual installments adding to the full advertised jackpot. Lump sum gives you control and faster compounding; annuity locks in steady income and reduces tax bracket risk.
Why is the cash value much smaller than the advertised jackpot?
The advertised jackpot is the total of all 30 annuity payments. The cash value is what the lottery would pay today to fund those payments (the present value at the lottery's bond rate). With higher rates, cash value drops further below the advertised number.
Is the lump sum or annuity better after tax?
It depends on your discount rate, expected tax-law changes, and your discipline. With a 5 to 6 percent discount rate, lump-sum-then-invested usually beats annuity on paper. Annuity hedges tax-law risk and prevents catastrophic spending. The calculator shows both net of estimated tax.
Are these numbers exact?
No. They are estimates based on the rates you enter and standard mandatory federal withholding. Actual tax depends on full annual income, deductions, state of residence at the time of payment, and lottery-specific cash-value ratios. Consult a tax professional before claiming any large prize.
