What is the difference between remainder mode and decimal mode?
Remainder mode stops once every digit of the dividend has been brought down and returns a quotient with a leftover remainder. Decimal mode keeps going past the decimal point by bringing down zeros, so 22 divided by 7 becomes 3.142857... instead of 3 remainder 1.
How does the calculator detect recurring decimals?
After each decimal step, the calculator records the new remainder. The first time a remainder repeats, the digits produced between the two occurrences form the repeating cycle. That cycle is shown in parentheses, like 0.(3) for 1 divided by 3 or 3.(142857) for 22 divided by 7.
Why does the result sometimes end with three dots?
If the expansion has not terminated and no recurring cycle has been found within your decimal-place cap, the calculator stops and prints three dots to signal more digits exist. Raise the max decimal places to keep going or to catch a longer cycle.
Can I divide negative numbers or decimals with this tool?
No. Schoolbook long division is defined for positive whole numbers, so this calculator rejects negative inputs, fractions, and zero divisors. For signed or fractional division, use the fraction calculator or a standard division calculator.
