Frequently Asked Questions about the Hourly to Salary Calculator
How do you convert hourly pay to annual salary?
Annual salary = hourly rate x hours per week x weeks per year. The US default is 40 hours x 52 weeks = 2,080 hours per year. So $25 per hour equals $52,000 gross per year at full time.
Can you give a few quick examples?
At 40 hours per week: $15 per hour is $31,200 per year, $20 is $41,600, $30 is $62,400, and $50 is $104,000. Drop to 32 hours per week and those numbers shrink by 20%.
Does the result account for paid time off?
Yes, if you keep weeks per year at 52. Salaried PTO is already baked into the annual figure. If you are an hourly worker who is unpaid for two weeks of vacation, set weeks per year to 50.
Is the annual number before or after tax?
Before tax. It is gross pay. A typical US take-home is 70-78% of gross after federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and state tax. Use the salary calculator for an after-tax estimate.
What is a common conversion pitfall?
Self-employed and 1099 workers often forget that an employee at $30 per hour costs the employer much more (payroll taxes, benefits, paid leave). To match employee comp as a freelancer, aim for roughly 1.3 to 1.5 times the hourly rate.
