Frequently Asked Questions about the GAD-7 Anxiety Score Calculator

What is the GAD-7?
The GAD-7 (Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale) is a brief, validated screening questionnaire developed by Spitzer and colleagues in 2006. It asks how often, over the last 2 weeks, you have been bothered by 7 anxiety symptoms such as feeling nervous, not being able to stop worrying, and trouble relaxing. It is widely used in primary care to flag people who may have an anxiety disorder.
How is the GAD-7 score calculated?
Each of the 7 items is rated on a 0 to 3 frequency scale: 0 for not at all, 1 for several days, 2 for more than half the days, and 3 for nearly every day. The total score is simply the sum of all 7 item scores, so it ranges from 0 to 21. This calculator adds them for you and shows the matching severity band.
What do the severity bands mean?
The standard cut points are 0 to 4 for minimal anxiety, 5 to 9 for mild, 10 to 14 for moderate, and 15 to 21 for severe. A total of 10 or higher is the recommended threshold for probable generalized anxiety disorder and usually warrants further evaluation. Higher scores generally mean more symptoms reported more often.
Does a high GAD-7 score mean I have an anxiety disorder?
Not on its own. The GAD-7 is a screening tool, not a diagnostic test. A score at or above 10 suggests further evaluation is worthwhile, but only a qualified clinician can diagnose generalized anxiety disorder after a full assessment. Factors like medical conditions, medications, and recent stress can also raise your score.
How often should I take the GAD-7?
Because each item asks about the last 2 weeks, it is reasonable to repeat the GAD-7 every few weeks to track how symptoms change or to see whether treatment is helping. Many clinicians re-administer it at follow-up visits. Use it as a consistent way to monitor trends rather than a one-time label.
Is this calculator a substitute for professional care?
No. This GAD-7 calculator is for education and general information only and does not replace professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. If your score is high, if anxiety is affecting your daily life, or if you ever feel unsafe or think about harming yourself, contact a clinician or your local crisis line right away.
