Flooring Calculator

Use 5 to 10 percent for a straight (square or grid) layout in a simple rectangular room. Step up to 10 to 15 percent for diagonal layouts, since every cut at the wall is angled. Plan on 15 to 20 percent for herringbone, chevron, or complex patterns with many cut planks. The calculator defaults to 10 percent, which fits most straight-lay engineered, laminate, and vinyl-plank jobs.

Boxes of flooring are sold by total coverage, listed on the carton (for example 22.5 sq ft per box). The calculator takes your room area plus waste, divides by the coverage per box, and rounds up to the next whole box, since you cannot buy a partial carton. Buy whole boxes so the dye lot stays consistent and you keep a few spare planks for future repairs.

Most US flooring is sold by the square foot (boxes, prices, and product specs all list sq ft). Square yardage shows up mostly for carpet and old-school estimates. One square yard equals 9 square feet, so a 180 sq ft room is 20 sq yd. The calculator returns both so you can match whichever unit your supplier quotes.

A pattern-matched floor forces angled cuts along every wall, and herringbone or chevron layouts require precise miters on nearly every edge plank. Off-cut pieces rarely fit elsewhere in the pattern, so they go in the scrap pile. Big-format planks also raise the waste percentage on small rooms, because a single bad cut wastes a much larger plank.

Hardwood (solid or engineered) usually ships about 20 to 25 sq ft per box and is the most sensitive to dye-lot drift, so always buy whole boxes from one lot plus 10 to 15 percent waste. Laminate runs about 22 to 26 sq ft per box and tolerates a tighter 5 to 10 percent waste because click-locks let you reuse off-cuts as starter planks. Vinyl plank covers around 25 to 35 sq ft per box and is the most forgiving, since you can dry-fit, recut, and even swap planks late in the install.
