What is FFMI and how is it calculated?
FFMI is the Fat-Free Mass Index, a measure of how much lean (non-fat) mass you carry relative to your height. First find your fat-free mass: weight times one minus your body-fat fraction, so 80 kg at 15 percent body fat gives 68 kg. Then divide that fat-free mass by your height in meters squared. For 68 kg at 1.8 m, that is 68 divided by 3.24, or about 21. It is the same idea as BMI but it ignores your fat, so it tracks muscle rather than total weight.
What is normalized FFMI and why does it differ from raw FFMI?
Normalized FFMI adjusts your raw FFMI to a standard height of 1.8 meters so lifters of different heights can be compared fairly. The formula is raw FFMI plus 6.1 times the difference between 1.8 and your height in meters. Taller people get a small subtraction and shorter people get a small addition. At exactly 1.8 meters the two values are identical. This calculator reports both so you can see the adjustment.
What is a good FFMI, and what counts as the natural limit?
For men, research by Kouri and colleagues (1995) found that drug-free lifters very rarely exceed a normalized FFMI of about 25, with most trained naturals landing between roughly 18 and 24. Values from 22 to 25 reflect a very muscular, lean physique built without drugs. A normalized FFMI at or above 25 is the commonly cited threshold that suggests anabolic steroid use, though it is a population pattern and not proof for any one person.
Does FFMI work the same for women?
The math is identical, but the benchmark bands were studied in men, so they read high for women. Women naturally carry less fat-free mass for a given height, so a typical natural FFMI for women sits a few points lower, often in the high teens. Use your own FFMI as a progress marker over time rather than comparing it directly to the male natural ceiling of 25.
How accurate is FFMI, and what affects the result?
FFMI is only as accurate as the body-fat percentage you feed it, since that number drives your fat-free mass. A bad body-fat estimate from a cheap scale can shift your FFMI by a point or more, so a measured method like DEXA or skinfold calipers is better. Height and weight matter too, but small errors there have less effect. Treat FFMI as a useful estimate, not an exact lab value.
