Frequently Asked Questions about the Dividend Yield Calculator
How do you calculate dividend yield?
Divide the annual dividend per share by the current share price, then multiply by 100. A $2 annual dividend on a $50 share gives a 4% yield. If your company pays quarterly, multiply the quarterly amount by 4 first.
What counts as a good dividend yield?
Most US large-cap dividend stocks land between 1.5% and 3.5%. Yields between 3.5% and 6% are high but still common for REITs, utilities, and mature payers. Anything above 6% deserves closer scrutiny.
Why might a very high dividend yield be a warning sign?
Yield is a ratio. When the share price falls fast, yield rises mechanically, even if the dividend has not changed. A double-digit yield often signals that the market expects a dividend cut.
How do I estimate my dividend income from a position?
Multiply the annual dividend per share by the number of shares you own. 100 shares paying $4 per year produce $400 in annual income, about $100 per quarter and $33.33 per month on average.
Is dividend yield the same as total return?
No. Yield only measures cash dividends against the current share price. Total return also includes capital gains or losses. A 2% yield stock that climbs 8% has a 10% total return; a 6% yielder that drops 10% still lost money overall.
