Frequently Asked Questions about the Discount Calculator

How do I calculate a percentage discount?
Multiply the original price by the discount percent (as a decimal), then subtract that from the original price. For 25% off $80: 80 - (80 x 0.25) = 80 - 20 = $60.
Is 30% off a good discount?
On regular retail, yes. It is typical for end-of-season sales and worth waiting for. For markdowns on a brand you trust, 30% off MSRP is the threshold many bargain hunters use.
How do I find the original price from the sale price?
Divide the sale price by (1 minus the discount as a decimal). If something is now $42 after 30% off: 42 / 0.7 = $60 original.
What is the difference between markdown and discount?
Marketing-wise, they describe the same math from different angles. A markdown is the retailer's permanent price reduction; a discount is a temporary offer or coupon. Both reduce what you pay.
How do I stack discounts?
Apply them sequentially, not by adding the percentages. 20% off then 10% off is not 30% off. It is 28% off (the second 10% applies to the already-reduced price).
