Countertop Square Footage Calculator

Measure each section's length and depth in inches, multiply them for that section's area, add the sections together, then divide by 144 because 144 square inches equal one square foot. This calculator does that for straight, L-shaped, U-shaped, and island layouts at once. It also adds the section lengths and divides by 12 to give you linear feet.

Square feet measure the full surface area (length times depth), and most slab materials like granite and quartz are priced per square foot. Linear feet measure only the run length along the front edge and ignore depth, which is handy for edge trim, backsplash, and rough layout. This tool reports both so you can match whichever number your supplier quotes.

Standard kitchen counters over base cabinets are about 25 inches deep, which is a 24 inch cabinet plus a roughly 1 inch overhang. Islands and peninsulas are often 36 to 42 inches deep, and a bar overhang adds another 12 to 15 inches. Measure your actual cabinets when you can, since custom layouts vary.

Measure one run wall to wall, then measure the next run from the edge of the first run (not from the corner) to its end. That keeps the corner square from being counted twice. Enter each run as its own section and the totals stay accurate.

The per square foot prices are typical mid-range US installed figures (laminate around $25, butcher block around $45, granite around $50, quartz around $70) and they vary widely by stone grade, region, and fabricator.
