Use feet and inches anywhere a human body height is being read, written, or said out loud in a US context. Passports, driver licenses, real-estate listings (for ceiling heights), doctors' charts, school records, athletics rosters, and personal conversation all use the compound 5 ft 9 in form rather than 5.75 ft. Decimal feet is what construction, surveying, and CAD software prefer because it is easier to add and multiply, but no one says 'I am 5.75 feet tall.' The two formats carry the same information; this calculator returns both so you can pick the one your form, system, or audience expects.

The 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement fixed the international yard at exactly 0.9144 meters, which makes 1 inch exactly 2.54 cm (0.9144 / 36). The US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa signed it, replacing the slightly different pre-1959 national inches (the US survey inch, for example, was 2.540005 cm). That tiny historical difference is irrelevant for human-scale measurements like height but matters for high-precision surveying. For everything this calculator computes, 1 in = 2.54 cm exactly with no rounding.

Twelve, by definition. The foot has been divided into 12 inches since at least the Roman uncia (which means one twelfth), and the US-and-British modern foot has stayed at 12 in through every revision of the yard and pound standards. That is why the carry math works: when you divide total inches by 12 to get whole feet, the remainder is the inches portion of the compound height. 69 in = 5 ft 9 in because 69 / 12 = 5 with 9 left over.

Because naive rounding can produce a malformed display like 5 ft 12 in. Take 365.75 cm: dividing by 2.54 gives 143.996 total inches, or 11 ft with 11.996 in remaining. Round that remainder to a whole number and you get 12 in, which means the calculator would display 11 ft 12 in unless it catches the overflow. The carry guard bumps feet by 1 and resets inches to 0 whenever the rounded remainder reaches a full 12, so the result reads 12 ft 0 in. The same edge happens at every whole-foot boundary when you ask for low-precision inches output.

Roughly 171 cm (5 ft 7.3 in) for men and 159 cm (5 ft 2.6 in) for women, based on the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration's pooled global data published in eLife (2016) covering 200 countries since 1914. The tallest national averages are in the Netherlands (183 cm / 6 ft 0.1 in for men, 170 cm / 5 ft 7 in for women) and the shortest are in Timor-Leste and Guatemala (around 160 cm / 5 ft 3 in for men, 150 cm / 4 ft 11 in for women). The US adult average sits at 175 cm (5 ft 9 in) for men and 162 cm (5 ft 4 in) for women per the CDC's National Health Statistics Reports, almost exactly the same as the global mean for men.
