What growth chart does this calculator use?
The calculator uses the CDC Year-2000 stature-for-age growth charts (NCHS, May 2000), the standard pediatric height reference in US clinical practice for ages 2 to 20. It looks up the 5th, 25th, 50th, 75th, and 95th percentile cutoffs for the child's exact age in months and sex, then linearly interpolates between published rows to place the child's measured height on the percentile scale. CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics both recommend these charts for routine growth screening from age 2 through adolescence.
Why does the calculator only work from age 2?
For infants and toddlers under age 2, the World Health Organization (WHO) growth standards are the recommended reference, not the CDC charts. The WHO charts were built from a multi-country cohort of breastfed children growing under optimal conditions and describe how children should grow, whereas the CDC charts describe how a 1970s and 1990s US sample did grow. CDC and AAP guidelines tell clinicians to use WHO length-for-age charts up to 24 months, then switch to CDC stature-for-age from age 2 onward. This calculator starts at age 2 to match that handoff.
What does the 50th percentile actually mean?
The 50th percentile is the median height for children of the same age and sex, meaning half are taller and half are shorter. It is not an average IQ-equivalent or a target to aim for. A child at the 25th percentile is shorter than 75 percent of peers, and a child at the 90th is taller than 90 percent of peers; both can be perfectly healthy. The percentile is a position on a population distribution, not a grade or a score.
What is the normal height range for a child?
Pediatricians typically treat the 3rd to 97th percentile as the normal range, which covers roughly the central 94 percent of children. Heights below the 3rd or above the 97th percentile do not automatically mean a problem, but they fall outside the typical band and usually warrant a closer look, especially if growth is also crossing percentile lines over time. The calculator flags whether a measurement sits inside or outside this range.
When should growth deceleration prompt a pediatrician visit?
Crossing two or more major percentile lines downward between routine well-child visits is the textbook warning sign and is worth a prompt pediatrician follow-up. The other red flags are a measured height below the 3rd percentile, a height more than 2 standard deviations below the mid-parental height prediction, or a sudden plateau in growth velocity. Causes range from benign familial short stature and constitutional delay to nutritional issues, chronic illness, growth-hormone deficiency, and other endocrine disorders. A single percentile reading is rarely diagnostic by itself; the trend across visits matters far more.
