Frequently Asked Questions about the Age on Mars Calculator
Why do the planets have such different year lengths?
Kepler's third law: the square of a planet's orbital period equals the cube of its average distance from the Sun, when you measure time in Earth years and distance in astronomical units (T squared = a cubed). The farther a planet is from the Sun, the longer its orbit and the slower it has to travel to stay in that orbit. Mercury (0.39 AU) zips around in 88 days, Neptune (30.1 AU) takes 165 Earth years per lap, and Pluto (39.5 AU) needs about 248. Your age on each planet is just your Earth age divided by that planet's year length.
How long is a year on Mars?
One Mars year is 686.971 Earth days, or about 1.88 Earth years. That means you celebrate roughly one Mars birthday for every two Earth birthdays. A 30-year-old on Earth is about 15.96 Mars years old. The NASA Perseverance and Curiosity rovers count their mission lifetimes in both Earth days and Mars sols (a sol is the Martian solar day of 24.6597 hours), but the orbital year is what this calculator uses for age.
Why is Pluto's year 248 Earth years long?
Pluto orbits the Sun at an average distance of 39.5 AU, almost 40 times farther than Earth, and a long looping ellipse takes 247.94 Earth years to complete. Pluto was discovered by Clyde Tombaugh on February 18, 1930. As of 2026, it has not yet finished a single orbit since its discovery: it will only complete its first observed Plutonian year around March 2178. Most people alive today, on any planet, are less than 0.5 Pluto years old.
Is Pluto a planet? Why include it here?
The International Astronomical Union reclassified Pluto as a dwarf planet in 2006, alongside Eris, Haumea, Makemake, and Ceres. It does not meet the third criterion for full planet status (clearing its orbital neighborhood). We still include Pluto because it is the classic "ninth body" people grow up learning about and because its 248-year orbit is the most extreme example of how orbital period scales with distance. Treat the Pluto figure as a fun science comparison, not an IAU-approved planet age.
What would my life look like on Mercury?
Mercury orbits the Sun in just 87.969 Earth days, so a 30-year-old on Earth is already about 125 Mercury years old. But Mercury rotates so slowly that one Mercury solar day (the time from one sunrise to the next) is about 176 Earth days, or roughly two Mercury years. So while your Mercury birthdays would come every three months, you would see only one Mercury sunrise every six months. A long Mercury life would still feel quiet: you would experience only a handful of sunrises before reaching the typical human life expectancy.
